"Mark English's paintings are lyrical landscapes of the mind. Based in nature, but contingent on a kind of mathematically abstract ideal, the spaces are geometrically balanced. The works are lightly atmospheric, imbued with a soft and muted breathiness, yet solidly grounded, with dense shapes in deep, dark browns and greens, near blacks.
The pictures suggest orderly solution, which, in a sense they are: two-dimensional spaces filled with an air of tranquility. Yet one feels these are places where anything can happen. Which may be a key to their success - grounded in rational, classic proportions, they shimmer with romantic emotion."
